What Are the Stats on Pregnancy After a Miscarriage?

Q&A on TTC—again

Just had a miscarriage/chemical pregnancy. Any stats on getting pregnant after a miscarriage? We’ve been trying for a few months and this was our first positive test, so it was very disappointing.

—Scared but Hopeful

I am so sorry for your loss. Miscarriage is heartbreaking, and often made more so because of how little it is discussed openly. I hope you are finding the support you need.

Your chances of getting pregnant again and carrying to term are very good. Having gotten pregnant once is a good sign of your ability to conceive, and the vast majority of people who miscarry go on to have children. We can also turn this around: in large samples of women who have at least one living child, 20% of them have had at least one miscarriage.

For an early miscarriage, the cause in nearly all cases is a chromosomal abnormality. It is really important to say: this is not the fault of something you did. After a chemical pregnancy, you can try again as soon as you feel emotionally and physically ready. Good luck to you.
