Can I keep formula out for more than 2 hours?

Last updated on April 1, 2026

When it comes to storing formula, the general guideline is to not leave it out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. This is because bacteria can grow in the formula, especially when mixed with saliva. However, there are a couple of studies that suggest bacterial growth may not be significant within a few hours. One study found that bacterial concentrations in formula stored in the fridge for 3 hours were similar to those at the start. Another study showed indistinguishable bacterial levels in formula stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. While these studies have limitations, they suggest that partially used formula could potentially be stored in the fridge and reused within a reasonable timeframe. However, it's important to note that these studies were conducted on adults, not babies. To be on the safe side, it's best to follow the CDC guidelines and dispose of any unused formula after 2 hours.
