Can I take allergy medication while pregnant?

Many common allergy medications, such as Claritin and Benadryl, are considered safe during pregnancy and are classified by the FDA as Category B drugs, which means we have compelling evidence of safety for them during pregnancy. If they work for you, you should feel comfortable taking them. Steroid-based nasal sprays (e.g. Flonase) are also considered safe. However, talk to your doctor before taking an antihistamine combined with a decongestant like pseudoephedrine; there is some older evidence of a slight increase in the risk of birth defects.
