Tell me about the rules for storing and using breast milk?

Last updated on April 1, 2026

When it comes to storing breast milk, the main concern is bacteria. The CDC guidelines are based on the fact that bacteria can multiply in breast milk if it's not stored properly. Research shows that at room temperature, breast milk is safe for about 4-8 hours, but this time frame changes based on how hot the room is. Even in a hot room, bacterial growth is minimal up to 4 hours. In the fridge, it's generally safe for about 4 days, and in the freezer, it can be stored for around 6 months. CDC guidelines might be a bit conservative, especially for healthy babies, so there is room for more relaxed storage policies. Ultimately, it's essential to be cautious with preterm babies, NICU situations, and donor milk. But for healthy babies, the guidelines may be overly cautious based on the current evidence.
