I resonate with your perspective as someone who hasn’t “just always wanted to be parents”. Having a child was never a given for me, it’s something I found I wanted to experience with my partner. We both went into it thinking we probably wanted to be one and done. Our daughter is currently 15 months old, and we are loving the parenthood experience and completely decided on being one and done. To me it feels like a really good balance of time and energy to spend with our daughter while still having resources and bandwidth to focus on our relationship, our careers, and ourselves as individuals. We have close friends and family with 2,3,4+ children and…it is not for us. To each their own, good luck with your decision making!
P.S. Our dog loves the baby and watching the two of them hang out is definitely a parenting highlight so far!
